The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, believe that a "thorough knowledge and understanding of the elements of music is essential for any performer".
Music Theory deals with matters such as note recognition, clefs, scales, key signatures, intervals, time values, time signatures and grouping of notes and rests which need to be understood as they are essential elements of reading and understanding music. Composing, answering rhythms, recognising phrase patters and learning music terminology are also all apart of this subject.
We hold Music Theory classes at the academy for all levels, and we’re proud to say we have a very high pass rate. All workbooks, practice exam papers, and textbooks are available to buy in our shop.
The importance of theory is held so highly, that a minimum entry requirement for all Practical Grade 6, 7,and 8 candidates is a pass in Grade 5 Theory. This is why we believe it is beneficial in planning a students future work to include aspects of theory from an early stage. Anyone looking to go into music college or study music at university need a requirement of Grade 8.
ABRSM Theory exams take place on a specific day three times a year. They are designed to be equally applicable to all instrumentalists and singers. The Music Factory is an ABRSM accredited centre and official examinations can be taken at the academy.
